There was a time when summers were long
And the tall cool grass waved in the wind
And the endless days and nights were spent
Under Maryland skies
And the boy stood tall at seven
And he'd catch and throw
And field and hit and run and pitch
And he'd dream
Dream about those days
When it would be his turn
To stand tall in the green grass
Of the outfield
And wear the black and orange
And hit second and play center
And make a big catch
That would retire the side
And the days went by so peacefully
And he'd practice and field fly balls
And he'd do anything they asked him to
Under Maryland skies
Because he wanted to be the one
That the crowd cheered for
When he stepped up to the plate
And swung his bat
And crashed a split-fingered fastball
Beyond the outfield
And up over the fence into the stands
To win the game
And be the one that was admired
Because he hit second and played center
And he'd hit the big hit
That gave his team the victory
And he'd slide and steal
And play all day in the sun
Until it got too dark for him to see anymore
Under Maryland skies
And he would make it someday
He'd get his chance to play for the thousands
That came just to see him
Under Maryland skies
