RELIGION 205: The Emergence of Judaism
Professor Ronald C. Kiener, Department of Religion
This course provides a historical overview of Judaism and the Jewish
people from Biblical origins to the end of the Talmudic era. Thus,
the focus of this course spans more than a millenium -- from the sixth
century BCE to the end of the sixth century CE. Our focus will be
further sharpened by concentrating on the religious and social develop-ments
during this period. The next 1000 years of Jewish history will be
covered in Religion 206 (Medieval Judaism). Finally, students
may complete the historical survey with Religion 218 (Judaism in
the 20th Century). There is no requirement to take both courses and
students may take 206 or 218 without taking 205, or vice versa.
