RELIGION 308: Jewish Mysticism

The goal of this course is to provide the student comprehensive knowledge
of the Jewish mystical tradition, from Rabbinic times to the modern era.
The prevailing methodology of this course is "history of ideas." Thus,
the material will be presented in historical sequence, with special attention
to the internal and external developments in the history of Jewish mysticism.
Furthermore, students will be exposed to the prevailing scholarly debates
in the study of Jewish mysticism. Course participants will learn about
specific texts and learn how to interpret texts in translation. Larger
methodological issues such as: what is mysticism? what is Jewish
about Jewish mysticism? will be explored.
