Subject: Re: Songs from Childhood

The second of the two songs mentioned by Elisa Steinberg [Mendele 15.001]
is called "hert a mayse" or "dos iz emes" depending on the source. Author:
Nokhem Yud, composer of the tune I looked at in di gilderne pave, New York,
1949: Y. Tsherniovski. Unfortunately, I could not locate the other song
mentioned in the post. I have filled in the blanks in the song below:

 hert a mayse, kinderlekh,
 hert mit noz un oygn:
 iber bobe yakhnes dokh
 iz a ku gefloygn.
dos iz emes, dos iz emes
          dos iz emes altz geven,
dos iz emes, dos iz emes,
          dos hob ikh aleyn gezen.

 zumer ovnt in der fri
 iz a shney gegangen
 un af a farbrentn shtroy
 is a ber gehangen.
         dos iz emes...
oyf a boym getantst a sher
 hobn gendz un tsign,
un a kats hot zikh gezetst
 oysmelkn di flign.
        dos iz emes......
 hot di pave ayngeshpant
 hekht a por in tseber
un ba Yoysken af der noz
 hengt a lung un leber.
      dos iz emes......

Subject: kak zey bkheyrim

I have one of those always-wanted-to-know-but-was-afraid-to-ask questions:
what does expression kak zey bkheyrim mean, exactly? I have heard it
uttered by my mother-in-law in frustration. When I asked what it means, she
explained as ikh shpay af zey alemen, ikh veys aleyn vos darf men ton .Yes,
but what does it mean literally?

Subject: Housekeeping

In order to protect Mendele's subscribers from spammers we recently stopped
listing the addresses of those who write for us. But, echoing what Luther
asked about the souls in Purgatory, suppose there are some who want their
addresses known? No problem. From now on, those who wish their addresses
printed should list them beneath their signatures. Mendele at the same
time will no longer respond to private requests for addresses.

If any Mendelists are holding off writing in Yiddish oysiyes because they
haven't yet looked into what they see as an arcane art involving Yiddish
fonts and keyboards, etc. it may be because they don't yet know that none
of those are necessary. Anyone who can reach Refoyl Finkel's wonderful
shraybmashinke at http://www.cs.uky.edu/~raphael/yiddish/makeyiddish.html
is in a position to produce 100% kosher Yiddish text kmoy halokhe m'har
YIVO. Be sure to choose "Unicode UTF-8" in the Output form and give it a
try.
